JUNE IS PTSD AWARENESS MONTH

June is PTSD Awareness Month

June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month, during which PTSD and Complex PTSD are acknowledged. June 27 is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day.

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can develop after a person experiences a traumatic event. C-PTSD can result if a person experiences prolonged or repeated trauma over months or years. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) does not currently acknowledge C-PTSD as a separate condition, but the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) does acknowledge it, and clinicians can diagnose it.

About sixty-one percent of adults reported at least one Adverse Child Experience (ACEs), which can include exposure to violence, abuse, or neglect; a death by suicide in the family; substance use or dependence in the family; mental health disorders in the family; having a family member incarcerated; chronic poverty or neglect; housing instability; or growing up in a crime-heavy environment. One in six said they had experienced four or more ACEs.

June is recognized as PTSD Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its impact on individuals and communities. This month aims to educate the public, reduce stigma, and promote understanding of Complex PTSD and PTSD.
